Salary: This appointment will be made on the Assistant Professor Scale in line with current Government Pay Policy. Appointment of this post will be no higher than the 8th point of the Lecturer scale (€48,572)

Post Summary

Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, invites applications for a full-time permanent Assistant Professorship in Sociology (any area of specialisation), Department of Sociology, School of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

The successful candidate, will have a PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline, will be expected to contribute significantly to the research output and teaching programmes (both undergraduate and postgraduate) of the Department. S/he will have, relative to career stage, a track record in research, including high-impact scholarship and international publications, teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

We particularly invite applicants with expertise in the area of social networks but applications will be considered from sociologists carrying out high quality research in any substantive field. The appointee will be expected to engage in wider public and policy debates, and to foster collaboration with other Departments in College and external research bodies.

The successful candidate will be expected to be available to discharge the full range of duties associated with this post in teaching, research, administration and contribution to College life and its community over the course of the full calendar year. Standard duties of the Post

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • undertake high-quality, internationally-recognised sociological research with a view to consolidating his/her publications record;
  • contribute substantially to the general teaching of Sociology at undergraduate and postgraduate level, incorporating module design and coordination, delivery of lectures and seminars, marking of assignments and examinations;
  • prepare and submit national and/or international research funding bids;
  • represent the Department of Sociology at national and international conferences;
  • Ability to attract postgraduate students to the department, and to supervise undergraduate, Masters and PhD students;
  • undertake administrative duties as assigned by the Head of School and Head of Department.

Person Specification

1. Qualifications

Essential

  • Have an excellent academic record and hold a PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline;
  • Have or be willing to acquire an appropriate postgraduate professional qualification in third-level teaching (e.g. by taking the new Trinity College Postgraduate programme in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education for which fees will be paid).

2. Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of research achievement, relative to career stage, in the form of publications in high-impact peer-reviewed international journals (e.g. ISI-ranked journals) and/or publications of equal standing of recognised originality and value;
  • Proven ability or evident potential to attract external research funding;
  • Experience in teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Ability to teach both larger (i.e. over 300 students) and smaller classes in addition to experience of teaching quantitative and/or mixed methods modules;
  • Ability to engage in public and policy debates and capacity to co-operate with non-university institutions;
  • Experience of working collaboratively and effectively in an interdisciplinary environment.

Desirable

  • Experience of module development and administration;
  • Experience of working with colleagues in a theory and method-pluralistic environment.

3. Skills & Competencies:

  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to teach statistical methods to post-graduate level;
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language; both written and oral;
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to enthuse listeners;
  • A commitment to research-led and innovative teaching methods;
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to effectively manage a demanding workload;
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to engage in the administrative requirements of the Department, School and College.
